UK’s Best Areas to Launch a Business

Torfaen in Wales has emerged as the top location in the UK for starting a business, with an impressive average of three new businesses opening for every two that close between 2022 and 2024. This robust growth rate highlights the area’s favorable business environment and supportive conditions for entrepreneurs.

The City of London ranks second, showcasing a strong ratio of 1.206 new business openings for every closure, equivalent to four new ventures for every three that shut down. This reflects the enduring appeal of the City as a hub for new business ventures, despite the challenges faced by many urban centers.

On the other end of the spectrum, Wyre Forest is the least favorable area in the UK for starting a business. The region experiences more than double the number of closures compared to new openings, with a low ratio of 0.451:1. This indicates significant challenges for entrepreneurs looking to establish and sustain businesses in this area.

Between 2022 and 2024, around 724,625 businesses were launched in the UK, while 800,165 businesses ceased operations, highlighting a challenging environment for new ventures. On average, for every 10 businesses that open across the UK, 11 close down. Among the four nations, England stands out as the most favorable for starting a business, boasting a slightly higher opening-to-closure ratio of 0.912:1. In contrast, Northern Ireland ranks the lowest, with a ratio of 0.808:1.

Torfaen in Wales emerged as the leading region for business startups, recording 995 new businesses and 670 closures between 2022 and 2024. This equates to a robust 1.485:1 ratio of openings to closures, meaning for every two businesses that shut down, nearly three new ones open. This ratio is 63.91% above the national average and 23.13% higher than its nearest competitor, the City of London. The first quarter of 2023 was particularly strong for Torfaen, with 295 new businesses opening and only 110 closing, achieving an impressive ratio of 2.682:1.

The City of London secured second place and is the top-ranked area in England for launching a business. Over the past two years, the area saw 4,280 new businesses open versus 3,550 closures, resulting in a healthy ratio of 1.206:1. This indicates that for every five businesses closing, six new ones are established, offering a strong potential for success. In early 2024, between January and March, 495 businesses launched, while 380 shut down, improving the ratio to 1.303:1 during this period.

Ranking third, the Isles of Scilly also showed promising figures despite their smaller size. Over the last two years, 30 new businesses were established, and 25 ceased operations, resulting in a ratio of 1.2:1. Notably, in the first quarter of 2024, five new businesses were launched without any closures, highlighting a positive trend for startups in this unique location.
